In the past decade, there has been a boom in technology and automation within the metal casting industry. We are taking advantage of this opportunity, as staying ahead of the curve has always been one of our primary goals at Harmony Castings. Quality has always been at the center of everything we do, so we take steps to improve our capabilities any way we can. We have recently added the Metrascan-R Black Elite Plus, an advanced automated five axis scanning system that represents a major step forward in our Industry 4.0 journey. The robotic scanning system moves the inspection equipment along a programmed path, collecting highly accurate dimensional data throughout the entire casting. With measurement accuracy up to .025 millimeters, the system quickly identifies surface imperfections and dimensional variations that might otherwise go undetected. The scanner can also compare the collected data directly to the customer's CAD model, providing a direct comparison between the actual part and the ideal model. Automated scanning improves repeatability, reduces the potential for human error, and provides faster inspection times without compromising accuracy.
Another important addition to our facility is our new automated grinding systems. By introducing robotic grinding, Harmony Castings is improving consistency while increasing production capacity. Before grinding begins, each casting is scanned by the robot and digitally compared against its CAD model. Using this information, the robot automatically generates the optimal grinding path for that individual casting. Rather than following a fixed program, the robot adjusts based on the actual dimensions of every part. This intelligent process allows us to achieve more consistent finishes, reduce production bottlenecks, and improve repeatability from one casting to the next.
