What Is the Difference Between T5 and T6 Heat Treating?

In the metal casting industry, heat treating is used to improve certain characteristics of the metal alloy in the castings, but there are multiple heat-treating processes to choose from. Generally, heat treating involves cycles of heating and rapidly cooling the castings, but there are multiple ways this is accomplished. At Harmony Castings, we offer two different forms of heat treatment, each with their own applications and benefits. T5 and T6 heat treating are offered in-house for all aluminum castings we produce. While both processes use controlled heating to improve our aluminum castings, they differ in how they are applied and the properties they are intended to achieve.

What Is T5 Heat Treatment?
T5 heat treatment involves artificially aging an aluminum casting after it has cooled from the casting process. Unlike T6, T5 does not include a separate solution for heat treatment and quench. The primary purpose of T5 is to increase strength to a moderate level while improving dimensional stability and machinability. T5 is also the cheaper option for those looking to limit the spending on their aluminum casting project. T5 can be a good option when a component needs improved mechanical properties and dimensional stability without requiring the higher strength associated with a full solution and aging treatment. This can make T5 useful for housings, covers, and other components where dimensional consistency and controlled performance are important.

What Is T6 Heat Treatment?
T6 includes solution heat treatment, quenching, and artificial aging. The solution treatment places alloying elements into a solid solution before quenching, followed by artificial aging. The primary purpose of T6 is to achieve a higher level of hardening and mechanical strength. For alloys such as our Aluminum A356, T6 is commonly selected when higher strength and mechanical performance are required. T6 heat treating is used in demanding structural applications where strength, hardness, and dimensional stability are the most important considerations.
